Advanced Mechanical Design of PWR Fuel Assemblies
Course number: TRF-M0002-G
Objectives:
Understand the origins of the PWR Fuel Assembly component designs. The trainee will profit from the Framatome experience with world-wide safety authorities requirements and reactor fuel design for different reactor types (Siemens-type, Westinghouse type, EPR).
Content:
The training encompasses an overview for the different Fuel Assembly components (Spacer Grid, Top & Bottom Nozzles including Filter element, Fuel rods, Skeleton, Fuel Assembly):
Derivation of the design features and their influence on the global Fuel Assembly behavior
Derivation and assessments of design criteria
Component testing
Introduction to the main mechanical design codes
Introduction to Fluid-Structure-Interaction (FSI) phenomena (Fuel Assembly Bow, Fretting and Vibration)
Integration of those features within Manufacturing & Documentation

The instructors come from the Framatome GmbH Fuel Engineering site. Their knowledge is based on years of experience in engineering service activities, as well as on the specific competences necessary for the training.
